This research investigates how the green agricultural transition affects export sophistication in water dependent countries of Central Asia between 2000 and 2024. The growing tensions of climate change, especially concerning water, have highlighted a need for more sustainable transformation and the upgrading of exports in developing countries. The study aims to discover the relationships between agricultural export sophistication and international competitiveness and green agricultural policies and resource management, as well as the efficiency of irrigation and renewable energy.Using panel data for Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, Dynamic System GMM (Generalized Method of Moments) is applied to the effects of green transition on the agricultural export sophistication. It is expected that green agricultural transformation with the efficient management of water will have a positive effect on export sophistication and the competitiveness of sustained trade, while an overreliance on the water will negatively impact export upgrading in the long run.
The study aims to enhance the international economic literature by combining green transition, water dependency, and export sophistication, and by providing evidence from the Central Asian region which has minimal studies.
